Frequently Asked Questions
CAN I BRING MY DOG?
Yes! But please remember that we are a working croft located in a busy farming area and there is always livestock near by. We also have a thriving population of ground nesting birds and we want to try to maintain that as much as possible. We do love dogs, please be a responsible dog owner so that we can continue to host our doggie friends.
WHAT ARE CHECK IN AND CHECK OUT TIMES?
Your accommodation will be ready on the day of arrival from 4 pm. Departure time is by 11 am on the day of departure.
WHAT DOES OFF GRID ACTUALLY MEAN?
When you stay with us you'll be having a proper "Off Grid" adventure. This means that your electricity is provided by solar panels and battery storage, your heating is by wood burning stove and your water comes from a treated private well. We'll provide bottles of our own spring water for drinking but we do ask you to think carefully about your water and electricity consumption, not a bad thing to be doing anyway.
DO THE SHEPHERD'S HUTS HAVE WIFI?
We decided not to install TV's or WiFi because we think it's a great excuse to get away from it all, disconnect from the world a bit and forge new connections with nature and the environment. You'll find a speaker, lots of books to dive into and a comfy seat by the fire though.
IS THERE ANYWHERE WHERE I CAN PREPARE FOOD AND DRINKS?
As much as we'd encourage you to make the most of the local pub and great food outlets in the area, we know that sometimes you just want to go it alone. We've designed and built small field kitchens located adjacent to each hut which have some basic equipment including pots and pans, cutlery, glasses and cups and utensils. There is a gas cooking stove, preparation area and a vintage sink. The huts are there to provide a simple option for food and drinks.
WHY IS THIS A NON SMOKING SITE?
Our huts are located in an area which is rich in grasses, broom, gorse and bracken. In dry spells this material could be easily lit from a used cigarette end. We cannot risk a hill fire in this area and for insurance purposes smoking is prohibited.
WILL I BE ABLE TO PARK MY CAR NEAR BY?
Your shepherds hut benefits from being remote from any direct vehicle access – that’s what makes us unique, your stay peaceful, and allows you to connect better with nature. Visitors will be able to park in the designated parking area which is a short distance away from your Shepherd’s Hut (it's about 150m away). You won't be able to park outside your hut but the grassed paths are well kept.
ARE THERE PRIVATE WASHING AND TOILET FACILITES?
Yes. Although you're off grid we don't think you need to compromise on comfort. Bracken has its own en-suite shower and toilet and Rowan has its own washing, toilet and showering area in the adjacent 'Hobbit Hut'. There is hot water for washing and showering but again please use water carefully - it's all part of the experience. The WC is a high quality composting toilet designed in Sweden specifically for higher end applications - these things have definitely moved on.
